Introduction

Amazon EMR Serverless is a serverless option that makes it easier for engineers and data analysts to run open-source big data analytics frameworks without configuring, managing, and scaling clusters or servers.

Problem

Amazon EMR’s console didn’t have a serverless option like its counterparts Amazon Redshift and MSK. The customer experience in the EMR console was outdated and needed to be updated to follow the AWS Polaris design system. How can I help customers run big data analytics more easily?

Solution

I worked with the UX design manager to reimagine the customer experience, redesign the user flow that reflects current EMR customer needs, and help fulfill the vision for EMR Serverless to be the customer’s primary service for running big data analytics applications.

Learnings

1. Familiarizing with big data

Started my journey without prior experience in internal consoles posed a challenge. However, through persistent efforts and immersion, I gradually gained proficiency in navigating AWS consoles.

2. Growth through mentorship and ownership

Found guidance and mentorship from my UX design manager, whose support proved instrumental in overcoming initial blockers. While encouraging independent problem-solving, his mentorship provided a solid framework for critical thinking and solution development.

3. Navigating stakeholder feedback

Engaging in research, meetings, and design reviews, I honed my understanding of EMR's console and its diverse user base, navigating through stakeholder critiques to refine designs and enhance user experience iteratively.
